Athenee Importers, established in 1975, is the largest importer and distributor of fine wine, spirits and beer from Greece and Cyprus in the United States. We believe that the future of Greek wines lie in the hands of the small producers. In the past 20 years, the Greek wine industry has undergone tremendous change. Initially, the Greek wine market was controlled by large wineries that produced wines for the mass market with very little attention paid to quality. As a result, Greek wines were not a strong presence in the marketplace and earned a bad reputation. As a result, the trade suffered greatly. In order to rectify the situation, industry leaders recognized the need for change. The next generation of Greek wines would lie in the hands of small producers who keep an eye to quality while closely guarding quantity.

As the winery is located in a nationally protected geographic area, care to the environment is a must. The Euganean Hills are a stunning collection of volcanic peaks located between Verona and Venice, a few kms south of Padua, the burial place of St. Anthony. Beyond beautiful hiking trails and hot springs, the volcanic soil provides a perfect setting for local grape varietals like Marzemino which is blended into Baci Dolci Red & Pink. Marzemino has been planted in the area for centuries, and most famously was referenced in Mozart’s Don Giovanni opera, “Versa il vino, eccelente Marzemino!” (Pour the wine, excellent Marzemino).

In 2003, winemaker Matt Smith launched Blacksmith Cellars with the release of his 2001 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, an elegant wine that celebrated the artistry, craftsmanship, and tradition of great independent winemaking. Two years later, Matt's first white wine, the 2004 Monterey Chenin Blanc, won a 4 Star Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair Commercial Wine Competition. While Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc have remained Blacksmith's flagship red and white, Matt loves to work with new varietals. Over the years he's added classic grapes such as Syrah and Chardonnay to Blacksmith's line-up, as well as lesser-known gems, such as Torrontes and Verdelho, and a pair of exceptional proprietary blends: "Adamantine" and "Hephaestus."

Just like wine, some of the best things in life do not just change, they evolve: developing gradually into a better, more complex state with time. The same is said of Blue Rock’s commitment to producing vintages true to their European roots. Wines on the estate are crafted with the type of knowledge and modern finesse that only come with experience. Blue Rock’s technique enhances the uniqueness of each wine`s character while aIso maintaining the soul of its history and the integrity of the land. The result: vintages that feel like an accessible luxury because they exceed expectation, but for a reasonable price. It’s like getting upgraded to first class when you least expect it.

In 2006 we moved to Oregon from Napa, where Brian had been working in wine for ten years. We started with a dream and made our first 150 cases in 2006. This Oregon adventure is inspired by our desire to grow grapes, make wine, and to have space for all of Clare’s animals and Brian’s projects. We named our farm and winery after our goal to provide a gracious and welcoming table for ourselves and friends, with a cornucopia of hand-crafted food and wine. Since taking that first big leap, we have taken lots of small intentional steps to built a winery and developed this land into a regenerative farm balancing the water, soil, animals and vines. We feel lucky to live here and we are still in awe and deeply grateful for the chance to build this dream and share it with you!

The Stones hold the secret Perhaps you’ve heard the almost mythical story, how the brash, young French Vigneron visited the then little-known town called Walla Walla, and fell in love with a few acres of seemingly useless, stone-covered farmland. While the nay-sayers nayed, Christophe Baron deftly turned that field of stones into the acclaimed Cayuse Vineyards. And the rest, as they say, is history—and a whole lot of spectacular wine. Cayuse is a domaine located in the Stones of the Walla Walla Valley. Over the past 20 years, Christophe has made it his mission to craft food-friendly wines of incredible depth, individuality and character—all from fruit grown entirely using biodynamic farming methods.

Convene by Dan Kosta is where the story continues for one of Sonoma’s most decorated vintners. Building on his experiences as the co-founder of Kosta Browne Winery, Dan’s commitment to crafting world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the world’s finest appellations remains unwavering. With Convene, Dan’s winemaker of choice is Shane Finley, with whom he has collaborated with since the early days at Kosta Browne. Over many vintages, they have developed a shared appreciation for what makes a wine memorable. Their pursuit of the blend is the magic of Convene, representing their ongoing journey to create a world class wine experience that is rooted in history and expertise.

Franco Serra is produced by the Sperone family who have been making affordable premium wines for four generations. In 1911, Antonio Sperone opened a small wine cellar in Torino where he crafted Vermouth and other fortified wines. Unsatisfied with the quality and price of the local wine, Antonio started his own winery in Puglia where land was inexpensive and produced good wine. He built a bottling facility in Torino and was soon able to offer his customers quality wines at prices everyone could afford. The business thrived and eventually Antonio's grandson Giacomo opened a new facility in 1960 near Milan where he produced vermouth, sparkling wines, spirits and fine wines. With the help of his sons Paolo and Antonio, the company grew quickly and achieved distribution throughout Italy and expanded into foreign markets. In 1983, the family purchased 75 acres of prime vineyards in Piedmont and built a new winery in the small town of Mombaruzzo just outside Monferrato. In 2006, brother and sister Andrea and Francesca became the 4th Sperone generation to join the company. Even as prices fetched for wines from this increasingly fashionable region continue to climb, the Sperone family proudly focuses on value. Franco Serra provides everyone with the opportunity to drink thoughtfully crafted, distinctive wines from Italy's most renowned region. The Franco Serra vineyards are managed by Adriano Giacobbe and Vaghi Daniela. They farm growing sustainable viticulture methods and are certified by the "Confederazione Italiana Agricoltori".

The San Giovenale winery, which takes its name from a nearby Etruscan necropolis, was founded in 2006 when the successful entrepreneur Emanuele Pangrazi fell in love with these hills while visiting the area on holiday. Emanuele worked closely with the famous Italian enologist Marco Casolanetti to locate top sites for vineyards in the picturesque valley of Blera just to the north of Rome and threw himself into learning all he could about making fine wine.

FIGGINS was born from “the site” — Planting to the proper varietals, placement within the vineyard, trellising, and hundreds of other decisions that go into winegrowing with the ultimate goal — To elevate “the site” through the wine.

Ambassador James Zellerbach founded Hanzell Vineyards in 1953 with a vision to create wines that could compete on the world stage. Named after his wife Hana, Hanzell sits at the southern toe of the Mayacamas mountain range overlooking the south-western end of Sonoma Valley and San Pablo Bay. After extensive time spent in Burgundy, Zellerbach returned inspired and educated by the region’s wines and grapes—Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He then planted these two varieties at a time when there were less than a few hundred acres of each planted in North America.

Hiro Sake is a world class; hand crafted Japanese Sake, created using Japanese expertise with an uncompromising approach to quality. The golden rice fields together with the water from the subterranean river beds, skirting the Miomote river in Murakami, Niigata prefecture, are the perfect setting for brewing our super-premium Japanese Sake. Our Toji or Sake Master has created an exquisite brew that bridges the heritage of the past with today’s modern drinking patterns. Although Japanese Sake is thought of as the traditional rice “wine” of Japan, the fermentation process used to produce Japanese Sake more closely resembles beer production.

Dedicated to expressing a range of red—and a handful of white—wines from its estate in the Central Coast of California’s Ballard Canyon appellation within Santa Ynez Valley, Jonata is one of a new breed of producers throughout the world who are thriving with a non-traditional amalgam of varieties and blends. With a commitment in particular to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, and informed by cutting edge viticulture, winemaking and a polyface approach to their estate, the Jonata wines are on the vanguard of an emerging quality movement in California winegrowing.

Although their first vintage was in 1968, Joseph Swan Vineyards is still young at heart. The passion and curiosity that Joe Swan brought to his craft are still evident in the winery today. Located in the heart of the famed Russian River Valley, now often proclaimed ground zero for great pinot noir, we embrace the artisanal spirit that defines this amazing growing region. The winery's roots were in old vine zinfandel and estate chardonnay and pinot noir. Today, they continue to embrace those wines but also, in recognition of the amazing quality and personality grapes grown by talented and dedicated winegrowers can achieve in this wonderful region, they have added a number of other wines to our portfolio. Each of the wines is a unique expression of its terroir and the vintage. While all carry the hallmark winery signature of balance and personality, they span a broad range of aromas, flavors and textures. As the winemaker often says, “the journey is often more exciting than the destination”.

Winemaker and co-founder David O’Reilly has crafted the Owen Roe wines since its inception, with a focus on producing wines of integrity and character. He is dedicated to sourcing fruit from only the highest quality vineyards in Yakima and Willamette Valley, and allows the expression of the grape define the end result. David seeks to produce the most authentic expression of each varietal, using minimal handling and traditional techniques. Selection of vineyard sites along with hands on involvement throughout the growing season is some of the most important winemaking work David does. His picking decisions are always made in the vineyard. David believes it’s only by observing nature that we can harvest fruit at its delicate peak of aromatic development, while maintaining balanced pH and high acidity. David’s wines consistently garner impressive accolades and scores from critics and publications such as Wine Spectator, Robert Parker and James Suckling.

In the 1940s, the Giovanni Piattelli Family immigrated to Mendoza, bringing a winemaking legacy from their native Maremma in Tuscany. Their tradition and passion continue to be the strong legacy behind this prestigious wine. In the late 1990s an American businessman, Jon Malinski, met the Piattelli Family in his travels to Argentina on the hunt for lumber to import into the US. Instead of lumber, Jon found vineyards, incredible wine, amazing people, beautiful landscapes, and a country that he could not stomach the thought of leaving. Soon these two families came together; and, Piattelli Vineyards was born. The winery is still 100% family-owned and managed. Jon’s spirit for adventure and relentless pursuit of perfection has led to the completion of the second winery in Argentina, a massive expansion of the property, and wines of impeccable quality being enjoyed worldwide

The vineyards grow on a high plateau at an elevation of 700 meters. The sedimentary limestone soils are either sandy and clayey in texture or rocky. Reddish gray-brown in color, the soils are very low in organic matter. The region has a very dry climate due to the topography, the sun exposure, and the fact that it is shielded from maritime air masses. Dry conditions and sunlight reduce the risk of grapevine fungal diseases and benefit proper fruit maturation. The selected varieties are ideal for quality winemaking, resulting in wines that are very balanced in terms of color, alcohol content, and acidity.

Perfecting the old California classics, Robert Biale Vineyards has become a revered standard of heritage vineyard Zinfandel and Petite Sirah in the Napa Valley. From the winery’s inception, the Biale Founders have cherished the tradition of historic old vines (some dating to the 1880s!) and prize the small quantity of concentrated and intense fruit that they produce. Diligent farming, expressive terroir, and superb elegance are the winery’s hallmarks. Among the winery’s portfolio of 20 wines that Winemaker David Natali crafts, Black Chicken Zinfandel is the flagship–and has become a benchmark for the varietal. It all started in the 1940s when 14-year-old Aldo Biale helped his mother make ends meet by selling to insider Napans–along with eggs and produce–some of the family’s homemade Zinfandel. Over the old “party line” phone system, the code words “a Black Chicken” signified a jug of bootleg wine…and kept nosy neighbors and the authorities from finding out about Aldo’s underground Zinfandel operation!

Situated at the edge of the Alsace wine route, the Schoenheitz vineyards are entirely concentrated on the steep slopes of the magnificent Munster Valley, at the beginning of the Vosges Mountains. The slopes boast the highest vineyard in Alsace. They are sometimes so steep that no tractor can work them. Granitic soils and extreme vine growing conditions develop pure and fine expression of the noble grapes varieties of Alsace.

SLO Down Wines started with 93 cases and a dream. Almost a decade later, we’re still shaking things up and blurring the line between what is and isn’t socially acceptable.

Each of our brands is distinctively devised to express the native energy of the various regions we source from and pay homage to the beautiful and bountiful Central Coast.

The grapes for the production of our wines come from vineyards of the clay and calcareous soils of Labastida, Páganos, Leza and Elciego, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. A north-south orientation is sought and they are driven on high trellises, thus ensuring greater exposure to the sun. By not watering the vineyards, they depend entirely on the weather conditions. We carry out the harvest manually and mechanically, so that the grapes arrive at the winery at their optimum time.

With a history dating back to 1264, and priceless old soleras, Valdespino ranks as Sherry’s most historic and traditional house. The bodega’s vineyard holdings are extraordinary, but it is their prized portion of Macharnudo Alto – one of the region’s oldest and most historic vineyards - that gives rise to Valdespino’s most renowned sherries : Fino “Inocente,” Amontillado “Tio Diego,” and their Palo Cortado “Calle Ponce.” Valdespino is the only house today that still ferments their wines in cask, and they age wines far beyond the legal minimums. The Fino “Inocente” spends – on average – 10 years under flor.

Since 1524 THE FINEST TASTE OF CHIANTI CLASSICO From their 30 hectars of vineyards, the Counts Capponi produce wines internationally recognised and enjoyed since the beginning of the 20th century. However, the products of Villa Calcinaia were already well known since the 16th century, as proven by documents in the family archive. Over the last 50 years the Capponi have continuously been investing in their wine making in order to improve the quality at the same time bearing in mind the ties of the terroir and its respected traditions.

VHR Cabernet is an estate-grown wine of place, the culmination of the Phillips family’s evolution from grapegrowing to winemaking over three generations. Years of traversing vineyard rows and caring for each of Vine Hill Ranch’s seven blocks have imbued a deep understanding of our estate vineyard’s unique characteristics. To produce a true wine of place, we take a minimal touch approach to winemaking: harvesting at optimal ripeness, meticulous sorting of fruit, cold-soaking, extended maceration, use of native yeast and new French oak barrels. Grapes from VHR’s selected blocks are vinified as separate lots to promote the full expression of the vineyard.

After 25 harvests, Ryan Waugh knows a thing or two about wine, as you’ll taste. But what keeps it exciting for us is connecting over the mystery that wine presents and the strong connections we form when we pursue that passion with others.
